Did you know that 8 questions asked to your patients can already guide you in the case of a rare disease? If you can answer most of these 8 questions with 'yes' and your intuition confirms it, it would be wise to consider a rare disease. Does the patient present with acute or chronic symptoms that are inexplicable, inconsistent or non-specific, or symptoms at an unusually young age? Is there a family history? Have there been a number of periods of illness with different or identical symptoms? Is there a history of consultations with different medical specialities without satisfactory results? Are there any pathological or borderline results that are inconclusive at first sight? Has there ever been any suspicion of psychosomatic aetiology? Have there been phases of the illness going back several years? Are certain exposure scenarios known (in relation to food, leisure activities, housing, animals, travel or work)? Did you know that 500,000 Belgians suffer from rare diseases? At the H.U.B., Professor Antoine Bondue, Director of the Rare Diseases Function (FMR), emphasises the importance of Belgian expertise and European networks. With over 7,000 rare diseases, patient recruitment is crucial for optimal care.  To increase the effectiveness of the care offered to patients suffering from rare diseases, the ULB and the H.U.B. are coordinating multidisciplinary consultations, encouraging hospital-ambulatory partnerships and insisting on the education of patients and their doctors.  Rare diseases are a major challenge for our healthcare system and a driving force for medical development. An innovative initiative based on a simple belief: eating well is part of good care. Nutrition: one of the pillars of perinatal health Sometimes, it is two o’clock in the morning. One expectant mother is waiting in the delivery room. Another has just given birth and is experiencing her first hours with her baby. A third is staying in the high-risk pregnancy unit. They all have one thing in common: at these key moments, their bodies need energy, nutrients and comfort. Yet these needs do not always coincide with regular mealtimes.This is what led to the creation of the Mama Corner, a healthy food vending machine located at the heart of the maternity unit. An innovative initiative based on a simple belief: eating well is part of good care.Meeting mothers’ real nutritional needsThe idea grew out of the teams’ experience in the field. Patients sometimes need to eat outside regular mealtimes, particularly after giving birth, during a prolonged hospital stay or while being monitored in the delivery room.An initial experience with a buffet trolley had already shown how much patients appreciated being able to access foods suited to their needs freely and at any time of day. A visit to several Swedish maternity units, where dedicated food areas have been designed for parents, also helped shape the project.Today, the Mama Corner offers hot meals, salads, wraps, sweet and savoury snacks, as well as products that support breastfeeding. Located close to the maternity unit, it accompanies mothers throughout their journey, from pregnancy through to the first days after birth.Pregnancy and the postpartum period: times of specific nutritional needsPregnancy and the weeks following birth are periods of profound physiological change. To support the baby’s growth, prepare for childbirth, support recovery after delivery and sustain breastfeeding, the mother’s body is constantly adapting. This results in increased nutritional and energy needs.“Nutritional needs increase during pregnancy and after childbirth, particularly for protein, iron, vitamins, essential minerals and high-quality fatty acids. That is why we have prioritised fresh, minimally processed and nutrient-rich products,” explains Laura Cuypers, midwife and the person behind the project.The choice of products has also been designed to meet different needs, including vegetarian diets, gluten or lactose intolerances, and dietary requirements related to gestational diabetes. This ensures consistency with the nutritional advice provided to patients on a daily basis.Collaboration in the service of healthThe Mama Corner is the result of a collaborative effort involving midwives, dietitians and catering partners. Together, they selected the products best suited to the needs of expectant and new mothers.Tastings were even organised for the teams to help build a varied and appealing range. The selection will be regularly updated based on patient feedback and new nutritional recommendations.Creating an environment that encourages healthy choicesBeyond the maternity unit, this project carries a broader message. At H.U.B, caring for patients is not only about treating illness. It also means creating an environment that makes healthy choices easier.By offering balanced and accessible alternatives at any time of day, the maternity unit at Erasmus Hospital aims to make nutritional recommendations practical and applicable in everyday life. The Mama Corner therefore benefits not only patients, but also their relatives, visitors and healthcare professionals working in the unit.A first stepThe ambition does not stop there. The teams want to continue expanding the range, develop health education around nutrition and further refine the selection of products available.The project is also part of a broader approach to social and environmental responsibility, with a focus on committed partners and initiatives promoting high-quality, often organic products, as well as more environmentally friendly solutions.Because in a maternity unit, taking care of a mother also means giving her the means to take care of herself. The teams at the Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Oncology of the Erasmus Hospital and Jules Bordet Institute propose a fast track diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The teams at the Department of Gastroenterology and Digestive Oncology of the Erasmus Hospital and Jules Bordet Institute propose a fast track diagnosis of colorectal cancer for patients showing warning signs, a positive result for the presence of blood in the stools or at high risk. On 20 and 21 March a giant colon will be installed in the lobby of the Erasmus Hospital and Jules Bordet Institute. Professionals from our institutions will be present to accompany you as you discover this organ and to stress the importance of colorectal cancer screening.  Essential screening Every year more than 8,000 Belgians, men and women, are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. In 90% of cases they are aged over 50. One third of these people die from their cancer because it was detected too late. If treated in time, colorectal cancer is cured in 90% of cases. Faced with this situation, our professionals decided to put into place fast track diagnosis for patients with warning signs or at high risk.  Screening with a colonoscopy is essential as it reduces the risk of developing a colorectal cancer and cuts colorectal cancer mortality by 50%. In addition to the diagnosis, this examination also has a treatment value as it makes it possible to detect the cancer at an early stage and to prevent a cancer developing by removing colorectal polyps and early stage cancers.  Who is the screening for? In the general population the risk becomes significant after the age of 50. From that age it is easy to effect the screening test by searching for blood in the stools. On this occasion the Jules Bordet Institute will be organising an awareness raising event complete with a giant colon. Accompanied by health professionals, you can go inside the colon to discover the organ in 3D and better understand why and how to protect yourself against colorectal cancer, one of the most deadly cancers in Belgium. Note the dates: 20 March at the Erasmus Hospital, between 9 am ad 4 pm; 21 March at the Jules Bordet Institute, between 9 am and 4 pm.  

The role of biobanks The mission of the Erasmus Hospital and ULB Faculty of Medicine biobanks is to collect, store and supply biological samples for scientific research subject to very strict regulations. The samples are obtained from residue body material following diagnoses or collected in connection with clinical studies.The material is linked to data on the sampling, pathology and patient while preserving donor anonymity. In Belgium, the donation of human body material is governed by the law of 19 December 2008. In the case of sampling following a diagnosis, the principle of opting out applies. In this case the residual material is used unless the patient opposes it in writing. This can be done at any time, including a posteriori. In the case of clinical studies, the patient’s prior agreement in writing is required.
