The role of the Haematology Department Hematology is the medical specialty that deals with diseases of the blood and immune system. Our department offers comprehensive, specialized care for patients suffering from these diseases. Haematology consultation Our mission is to provide specialized, personalized care for every patient. If you don't yet have a precise diagnosis, you can book an appointment in general hematology, and you will then be referred to one of our experts. Our specialties In addition to general hematology consultations, our department is organized into several clinics and centers of expertise:Thrombosis and haemostasis clinic: management of coagulation disorders and bleeding disorders.Red blood cell and iron disorders clinic: specializing in the management of anemia and iron disorders.Reference center for hereditary red blood cell diseases: sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and other rare red blood cell diseases.Reference center for porphyrias: Diagnosis and treatment of porphyrias.Castelman disease reference center: Management of this rare disease.Reference center for the management of Thrombocytopenic Purpura.Histiocytosis reference center: Care for patients with these rare diseases.Haematological oncological diseases are treated at the Institut Jules Bordet, a center of excellence for cancer care. Our General Hematology care units at Erasme HospitalAn inpatient unit: for patients requiring continuous monitoring and specific care for rare blood disorders (sickle cell disease, thalassemia, porphyria, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura). An outpatient treatment unit: for patients requiring treatment without prolonged hospitalization.  Our Hemato-Oncology care units at the Institut Jules BordetTwo in-patient units: for tailored care of patients with blood cancers. An outpatient treatment unit: for treatments requiring monitoring without prolonged hospitalization.Cytapheresis unit: for treatments involving the separation and collection of blood cells.A cell therapy unit: for innovative therapies such as CAR-T cells and gene therapies. Genetic counselling - hereditary red blood cell disorders Genetic counseling is dedicated to rare hereditary red blood cell diseases (sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, spherocytosis, elliptocytosis, pyruvate kinase deficiency, etc.). The consultation is designed to inform a person or family who is or may be at risk of one of these diseases, to help them understand the disease, the tests required for diagnosis and the interpretation of test results. In this way, a person or family has the opportunity to make an informed choice about the health of their loved ones in relation to a rare hereditary red blood cell disease. For more information, please make an Cons [dot] Hemato [at] hubruxelles [dot] be (appointment with Prof. Béatrice Gulbis)' specialist consultation. Cardiology
Our role Cardiology is the medical discipline dedicated to cardiovascular disease. We treat problems linked to the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. Our activities are diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive. In addition to patients who come to us directly, we are also a key interface for other departments and sectors within our hospital and hospital network. Our approach is multidisciplinary and includes a medico-surgical dimension in the interests of optimal care. Image Our specialities The Erasmus Hospital Cardiology Department includes a cardiovascular centre that provides outpatient care, a hospitalisation care unit (following cardiac surgery), an interventional cardiology unit (with 6 angiography wards, 3 dedicated to cardiology) and a cardiac intensive care unit. In addition to the outpatient and hospitalisation care, the department also provides a round-the-clock cardiology service.   The department spans 8 sectors of activity:   The Interventional Cardiology Clinic treats coronary, valvular and structural disease in a high-tech environment.   The Rhythmology Clinic is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac rhythm abnormalities (auricular fibrillation for example), including by invasive electrophysiological procedure. This clinic also monitors patients with implanted devices. The Echocardiography and Cardiac Assessment Laboratory is a central pivot in treating all persons with a heart problem or a disorder that could have an impact on cardiovascular health.    Affection of the pulmonary circulationThe Cardiac Insufficiency and Pulmonary Vascular Disease Clinic   (see Focus) offers advanced care for patients, including monitoring of implanted devices to assist circulation and a transplant programme. This sector draws on recognised expertise through a network that is a European reference.   Our expertise in cardiovascular genetics and rare cardiac diseases serves to detect the genetic components and family risk of cardiac and/or vascular disease.   The Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Clinic proposes primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention programmes (for persons with personal antecedents), through multidisciplinary care programmes.    Transplantation and cardiac assistanceThe Cardio-Oncology Pole works with oncologists from the Jules Bordet Institute to anticipate, limit and manage the cardiotoxicity potential of certain anticancer drugs.   Paediatric cardiology is provided in association with HUDERF cardiologists, in particular when young patients become adults. This ensures a structured transition within the HUB for congenital cardiac pathologies.  Our Team Image Our medical specialists Focus The Erasmus Hospital Cardiology Department possesses internationally recognised expertise in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). This rare disease first develops in the blood vessels of the lung and leads to cardiac insufficiency. Early and sufficient treatment makes it possible to increase life expectancy. The department offers access to innovative treatment (medical, surgical and interventional) as well as expertise in the field of genetics. Research The Erasmus Hospital Cardiology Department is very active in fundamental and clinical research. Its participation in many clinical studies gives patients early access to innovative treatment. In cooperation with the Cardiology Laboratory, the Cardiopulmonary Physiology Laboratory, the ULB Genetics Laboratory and the IRIBHM, the Cardiology Department is involved in a number of research projects at Belgian and/or European level with publications  in the fields of rhythmology, cardiac insufficiency, PAH, cardiovascular prevention and cardiogenetics.  The department is also contributing to the development of a new method of studying cardiac movement (known as ballistocardiography), in cooperation with engineers at the ULB. Projects are also underway on the potential contribution of artificial intelligence in cardiology.    Publications ESC/ERS Scientific Document Group. Translational neuroimaging
Our role The H.U.B’s Neuroimaging Department is equipped with two high-tech devices that enable us to map and study the functioning of the brain.  « Our principal activity is research », explains Professor Xavier De Tiège, head of the department. « It is ‘translational’ in the sense that we aim to bring the results of our research to clinical practice, for the benefit of patients ». Image Image The H.U.B’s Neuroimaging Department cooperates regularly with Neurosurgery, ENT, Radiology, la radiologie, Child Psychiatry, etc.To get more info about the service : SecMed [dot] MedNuc [dot] erasme [at] hubruxelles [dot] be (SecMed[dot]MedNuc[dot]erasme[at]hubruxelles[dot]be). Our specialities The H.U.B’s Translational Neuroimaging Department has two leading edge technologies: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) records brain activity in a totally non-invasive way to a high degree of precision in terms of time (millisecond) and space (a few mm).  MEG has 2 clinically recognised indications:  to precisely pinpoint the epileptic source to be operated on in the case of refractory epilepsy;   to precisely locate functionally important areas of the brain  (for language, mobility, vision, etc.) in relation to a brain tumour or lesion that has to be operated on.   The department also contributes internationally to developing the MEG of the future based on a new sensor technology  known as optical pumping magnetometers. This MEG system can be fitted directly to the scalp  and offers a precision that is superior to the present system.   PET-MRI is a technology that combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a  PET-Scan. It makes it possible to visualise the brain’s anatomy and functioning simultaneously. It is very useful for studying the brain’s structure and functioning in the case of brain tumours, multiple sclerosis, cognitive disorders  such as Alzheimer’s, certain learning difficulties in children, autism spectrum disorders, etc.    Our team Image Our specialists Research The functional neuroimaging platform at the ULB – of which the Translational Neuroimaging Department and the Neuroanatomy and Neuroimaging Laboratory  (LN2T) headed by Professor Xavier De Tiège are a part – enables researchers from the ULB’s Institute of Neurosciences, together with other Belgian laboratories and universities, to have access to MEG  and PET-MR technology. Within the ULB itself, research relating to these two devices concentrates on its sensomotor, language and cognitive functions. It is a question of studying how and to what degree certain brain diseases (epilepsy, tumours, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis) affect these major brain functions.
