Our role This multidisciplinary team of healthcare staff exercising different professions aims to ensure continuity of care at the Erasmus Hospital and externally when the patient approaches end of life or requires symptomatic treatment, notably to manage pain and uncomfortable symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, hiccups, constipation, etc. Our mobile team is available on request for the care team, patient and patient’s family.    Image Our specialities Our team consists  of liaison psychiatrists, internists, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacists and social workers.  Their missions are to give timely and/or repeated opinions without assuming direct responsibility for the patient, to offer support to those around the patient and the care teams, to prepare for discharge, return home or transfer to another institution or rest home in close cooperation with the family GP and the required outpatient assistance and care structures. All team members listen to the patient, possibly provide advice and increase the awareness of all the interlocutors while respecting their individual philosophical convictions and religious beliefs. The joint approach to a patient with a serious, progressive and incurable illness must be centred around respect for autonomy while seeking to guarantee as much as possible the remaining quality of life and comfort.     Useful links Fédération Bruxelloise de Soins Palliatifs (FBSP)  Association pluraliste de soins palliatifs de la région de Bruxelles (Palliabru) : +32 (0)2 743 45 92

Our role The Hospital Hygiene and Epidemiology Clinic is the operational structure responsible for preventing healthcare-associated infections at Erasme Hospital. It is staffed by doctors and hygiene nurses. Image Image Image Image Our tasks In accordance with legal requirements, the Epidemiology Clinic is mainly responsible for the following tasks: Developing, implementing and monitoring a strategy for standard protective measures aimed at preventing the transmission of infectious germs and monitoring nosocomial infections.Implementing a strategy to combat epidemics.Monitoring hygiene-related aspects of hospital activities, such as building construction and alterations, activities in the Operating Theatre and other medico-technical sectors.Training and informing hospital staff about infection prevention measures.To carry out these various tasks, the Hospital Epidemiology and Hygiene Clinic works closely with the Medical Director, the Director of the Nursing Department and the Hospital Hygiene Committee.Nosocomial infections complicate 5 to 10% of hospital admissions and are one of the most significant causes of serious adverse events occurring in hospital. The consequences are high mortality and morbidity, and prolonged and more costly hospital stays.Preventing them is therefore a strategic priority for all institutions, both in terms of patients and public health authorities.To carry out its preventive missions, the Hospital Epidemiology and Hygiene Clinic works in collaboration with all the hospital's departments. Our role The H.U.B’s Neuroimaging Department is equipped with two high-tech devices that enable us to map and study the functioning of the brain.  « Our principal activity is research », explains Professor Xavier De Tiège, head of the department. « It is ‘translational’ in the sense that we aim to bring the results of our research to clinical practice, for the benefit of patients ». Our specialities The H.U.B’s Translational Neuroimaging Department has two leading edge technologies: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) records brain activity in a totally non-invasive way to a high degree of precision in terms of time (millisecond) and space (a few mm).  MEG has 2 clinically recognised indications:  to precisely pinpoint the epileptic source to be operated on in the case of refractory epilepsy;   to precisely locate functionally important areas of the brain  (for language, mobility, vision, etc.) in relation to a brain tumour or lesion that has to be operated on.   The department also contributes internationally to developing the MEG of the future based on a new sensor technology  known as optical pumping magnetometers. This MEG system can be fitted directly to the scalp  and offers a precision that is superior to the present system.   PET-MRI is a technology that combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a  PET-Scan. It makes it possible to visualise the brain’s anatomy and functioning simultaneously. It is very useful for studying the brain’s structure and functioning in the case of brain tumours, multiple sclerosis, cognitive disorders  such as Alzheimer’s, certain learning difficulties in children, autism spectrum disorders, etc.    Our team Image Our specialists Research The functional neuroimaging platform at the ULB – of which the Translational Neuroimaging Department and the Neuroanatomy and Neuroimaging Laboratory  (LN2T) headed by Professor Xavier De Tiège are a part – enables researchers from the ULB’s Institute of Neurosciences, together with other Belgian laboratories and universities, to have access to MEG  and PET-MR technology. Within the ULB itself, research relating to these two devices concentrates on its sensomotor, language and cognitive functions. It is a question of studying how and to what degree certain brain diseases (epilepsy, tumours, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis) affect these major brain functions.
