Neurology

The Department of Neurology has several functional units dedicated to the management, most often multidisciplinary, of complex conditions.

• The Stroke Unit was developed to provide transdisciplinary care for ischaemic and haemorrhagic cerebrovascular accidents and works continuously with the Emergency Department and the Interventional Neuroradiology Department to offer the possibility of acute cerebral arterial revascularisation.

• The Memory Clinic, which manages cognitive disorders, including degenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal degeneration, etc.).
• The Neuromuscular Disease Reference Centre (CRNM) provides follow-up for diseases affecting the peripheral nerves (polyneuropathies, ganglionopathies, polyradiculoneuritis, etc.), muscles (polymyositis, muscular dystrophies, etc.) and the neuromuscular junction (myasthenic syndromes, etc.).
• The Multidisciplinary Epilepsy Centre is a reference centre for refractory epilepsies. All investigative techniques are available, including MEG (magnetoencephalography, the only facility of its kind in Belgium). Treatment may occasionally involve targeted neurosurgery, thanks to the close collaboration between the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
• The Multiple Sclerosis Clinic manages inflammatory disorders of the central nervous system (multiple sclerosis and associated diseases such as MOGAD, neuromyelitis optica and central nervous system vasculitis).
• The Rare Neurological Diseases Clinic provides specialised, multidisciplinary care for diseases such as genetic epilepsies, ataxias and rare neuroinflammatory diseases (find out more about the Rare Diseases Function).
• The Abnormal Movements Clinic manages patients with Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia, chorea, myoclonus (involuntary jerks), tics and ataxia (balance disorders).
• Specialist consultations for cephalalgia and migraine, neurourology and neuro-ophthalmology.
• The Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory.
