Ophthalmology
Our role Ophthalmology is the medical speciality concerned with the eyes. Our aim is to improve visual health and treat eye disease. Image "Our care is comprehensive: from screening to medical and/or surgical treatment. The academic aspect is and must remain central. We have doctors who are experts in modern treatments designed for all stages of life."  Our specialities The Ophthalmology Department is subdivided into a number of elements: The Orbito-Palpebro-Lacrymal and Onco-Ophthalmology Clinic is concerned with problems of the eye socket, eyelids, tear glands and ducts as well as with the orbital mass.    The Glaucoma Clinic is recognised nationally for its expertise; patients are referred to this clinic from throughout Belgium. The Paediatric Ophthalmology Clinic prevents, screens for and treats eye problems in children.  Examples: refraction problems (myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism), strabism, amblyopia, eye development anomalies, infectious diseases, etc. Corneal medical treatment proposes a range of treatment to stabilise and/or treat degenerative or progressive diseases on the surface of the eye. Corneal surgery is fast developing and carries out all available cornea grafts. Refractive surgery seeks to dispense with optical corrections such as spectacles or contact lenses.    Retinal medical treatment is concerned with pathologies such as age-associated wet or dry macular degeneration (AMD). Retinal surgery is used, for example, to correct detached retinas or to place or change intraocular transplants, etc. Neuro-ophthalmology treats disorders of the optic nerves and all the various ocular disorders associated with a neurological pathology (SEP, stroke, brain tumour, etc.) Some diseases (diabetes, tuberculosis, Sjögren's syndrome, etc.) can affect the eyes and threaten vision. This is why the Ophthalmology Department cooperates with other departments such as endocrinology, rheumatology, paediatrics, haematology, etc.  Our team Image Our medical specialists Research The ophthalmologists at the Erasmus Hospital carry out clinical studies and fundamental research, on: vitreoretinal proliferation, in collaboration with the ULB's Laboratory of Physiopathological and Nutritional Biochemistry (LBPN);cornea cells, in collaboration with the Jules Bordet Institute's Cell Therapy Laboratory. Focus Every year the Ophthalmological Department carries out approximately 2,000 intravitreal injections. This type of treatment can be indicated to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinopathies associated with diabetes, intraocular inflammation, etc.  Publications Lien vers Neuro-Ophthalmological Manifestations in Children with Down Syndrome: Current Perspectives Auteurs : Lavinia Postolache 1, Anne Monier 2, Sophie Lhoir 1Journal : Eye Brain 2021 Jul 21;13:193-203. doi: 10.2147/EB.S319817. eCollection 2021. 10 August 2023 Lien vers Intense Pulsed Light Therapy in the Treatment of Dry Eye Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. ENT
Our role The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department is concerned with pathologies of the ears, nose and throat.   "This anatomical region is at the crossroads of a number of functions: hearing, swallowing, sense of smell, balance, phonation (production of language sounds), breathing, etc. We therefore diagnose and propose treatment for diseases that affect the organs, tissues and functions of the ENT region."  Depending on the case, the treatment can be medical, surgical or paramedical (speech therapy, vestibular physiotherapy, etc.)   Image Image Our specialities The activities of the Erasmus Hospital ENT Department span 4 clinics:   The Otology Clinic that is concerned with ear, hearing and balance problems. For example: deafness, tinnitus, chronic infections, etc.   The Rhinology Clinic that is concerned with problems of the nose (e.g. chronic tinnitus and rhinitis, nasal tumours, etc.) and sleeping problems (e.g. sleep apnoea, snoring, etc.)    The Laryngology Clinic that is concerned with voice and swallowing problems, including of a cancerous origin (e.g.: dysphagia, dysphoria, etc.)   The Paediatric ENT Clinic that is situated on the HUDERF site. The ENT field being an anatomical crossroads, the care is very often multidisciplinary. ENT doctors therefore cooperate regularly with other departments: neurology, pneumology, ophthalmology, stomatology-dentistry, etc. Our team Our specialists Focus The ENT Department proposes joint consultations for certain pathologies. In this case the patient is seen at the same time by two specialist doctors:   An ENT doctor and a neurologist for dizziness and balance problems (e.g. Ménière disease)An ENT doctor and a pneumologist for problems relating to respiratory immuno- allergology  (e.g. allergic asthma, chronic rhinitis, nasal polyposis, etc.)    Research The ENT Department participates in several research programmes. It cooperates, for example, with the ULB's Institute of Neurosciences and in particular with the Functional Brain Mapping Laboratory. Pneumology
Our role Pneumology is the medical speciality concerned with diseases (infectious, cancerous or fibrotic) that affect the respiratory organs: bronchial tubes (asthma, COPD, etc.) or lungs (pneumonias, pulmonary fibrosis, allergic pulmonary diseases, etc.). Image Image In addition to their general pneumology consultation, the H.U.B. pneumologists all have a subspeciality in a type of disease or in thoracic endoscopy. We are the Belgian reference centre for several diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic activities. Pr Dimitri Leduc Director of the H.U.B. Interhospital Department of Pneumology Our specialities In addition to a general pneumology consultation, the H.U.B. Interhospital Department of Pneumonia is structured into 7 clinics and centres of expertise:    The Cystic Fibrosis and Lung Transplant Reference Centre, together with  thoracic surgery, provides long-term follow-up  for persons with cystic fibrosis and/or who can benefit or have benefitted from a lung transplant.   The Asthma and Allergology Clinic is concerned with all forms of asthma, including the most severe, which are treated with biotherapies.  The Interstitial Pulmonary Diseases Clinic is one of 3 Belgian reference centres for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibroses.   The Thoracic Endoscopy Reference Centre (see Focus) The Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Rehabilitation Centre provides a full range of available treatment, including endoscopic or surgical treatment (pulmonary volume reduction or transplant) for the most severe cases.   The Thoracic Cancer Clinic treats lung cancer patients, in cooperation with the Jules Bordet Institute.   The Sleep-Related Respiratory Disorders Clinic is concerned with patients with obstructive apnea requiring recourse to a CPAP.  The Department also has 2 technical platforms:  The respiratory function tests (RFT) that are carried out under the control of the physiotherapists in consultation;  A platform dedicated to endoscopy that the pneumologists share with the urologists and gastroenterologists.  Our Team Image Our specialists Focus The H.U.B. Thoracic Endoscopy Reference Centre provides all the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the discipline and has developed an innovative approach to pulmonary nodules. Thanks to scanner images acquired upstream, the Centre uses a GPS-type endoscopic navigation technique that makes it possible to visualise and, above all, reach a lesion located deep in the bronchial branches, beyond the reach of conventional endoscopy. This permits a biopsy and thus a non-invasive diagnosis of these potentially cancerous nodules.  Research The H.U.B. Interhospital Department of Pneumology pursues several lines of fundamental, translational and clinical research. Studies are carried out in the fields of asthma and COPD in particular – with the Asthma Laboratory  – focusing on pulmonary fibrosis, immunology and respiratory physiology.

Cardiology
Our role Cardiology is the medical discipline dedicated to cardiovascular disease. We treat problems linked to the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. Our activities are diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive. In addition to patients who come to us directly, we are also a key interface for other departments and sectors within our hospital and hospital network. Our approach is multidisciplinary and includes a medico-surgical dimension in the interests of optimal care. Image Our specialities The Erasmus Hospital Cardiology Department includes a cardiovascular centre that provides outpatient care, a hospitalisation care unit (following cardiac surgery), an interventional cardiology unit (with 6 angiography wards, 3 dedicated to cardiology) and a cardiac intensive care unit. In addition to the outpatient and hospitalisation care, the department also provides a round-the-clock cardiology service.   The department spans 8 sectors of activity:   The Interventional Cardiology Clinic treats coronary, valvular and structural disease in a high-tech environment.   The Rhythmology Clinic is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac rhythm abnormalities (auricular fibrillation for example), including by invasive electrophysiological procedure. This clinic also monitors patients with implanted devices. The Echocardiography and Cardiac Assessment Laboratory is a central pivot in treating all persons with a heart problem or a disorder that could have an impact on cardiovascular health.    Affection of the pulmonary circulationThe Cardiac Insufficiency and Pulmonary Vascular Disease Clinic   (see Focus) offers advanced care for patients, including monitoring of implanted devices to assist circulation and a transplant programme. This sector draws on recognised expertise through a network that is a European reference.   Our expertise in cardiovascular genetics and rare cardiac diseases serves to detect the genetic components and family risk of cardiac and/or vascular disease.   The Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Clinic proposes primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention programmes (for persons with personal antecedents), through multidisciplinary care programmes.    Transplantation and cardiac assistanceThe Cardio-Oncology Pole works with oncologists from the Jules Bordet Institute to anticipate, limit and manage the cardiotoxicity potential of certain anticancer drugs.   Paediatric cardiology is provided in association with HUDERF cardiologists, in particular when young patients become adults. This ensures a structured transition within the HUB for congenital cardiac pathologies.  Our Team Image Our medical specialists Focus The Erasmus Hospital Cardiology Department possesses internationally recognised expertise in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). This rare disease first develops in the blood vessels of the lung and leads to cardiac insufficiency. Early and sufficient treatment makes it possible to increase life expectancy. The department offers access to innovative treatment (medical, surgical and interventional) as well as expertise in the field of genetics. Research The Erasmus Hospital Cardiology Department is very active in fundamental and clinical research. Its participation in many clinical studies gives patients early access to innovative treatment.
