Dermatology
Our role Dermatology is the medico-surgical speciality concerned with diseases of the skin, the mucous membranes and integument (hair, nails, body hair). Image Image In addition to dermatological diseases as such, other diseases or certain treatment can also have an impact on skin health. This is why dermatologists often work closely together with other medical or surgical services Pr Véronique Del Marmol Head of the Interhospital Dermatology Department at the H.U.B. Our specialities The H.U.B’s Interhospital Dermatology Department is structured as follows: General dermatology is often the gateway to another specialised consultation.   Paediatric dermatology, which straddles the Erasmus Hospital and the HUDERF, treats all skin diseases in children.   Oncological dermatology, which straddles the Jules Bordet Institute and the Erasmus Hospital, treats all skins cancers (melanoma and others) and skin lymphomas, as well as  dermal toxicities linked to certain cancer treatments. Innovative methods of early diagnosis are also available.    Dermatological emergencies responds to acute and sudden problems. Examples: allergic reaction, zona disease, skin infection, acute diabetic foot, etc.    Chronic sore care (especially sores linked to diabetic foot) is carried out at the Erasmus Medical Center (EMC).  The Allergology Clinic treats  contact allergies, eczema, hives and certain occupational diseases that affect the skin. Its activities are  both diagnostic (patch test, prick test, etc.) and therapeutic. The reference centre for Verneuil’s disease (or hidradenitis suppurativa) is Belgium’s only centre  dedicated to this disease.  It is a part of a European Reference Network (ERN). ***mettre logo ERN + lien vers vidéo*** The skin, hair and hormones consultation is concerned with skin diseases that could have a hormonal origin. Examples: hirsutism, alopecia (hair loss), alopecia areata, stubborn acne, etc.   A dermatologist holds a consultation in gynaecology for diseases  affecting the  female genital mucosa. Examples: vaginal candidiasis, STIs, condyloma, etc.   The consultation dedicated to diseases of the  male genital mucosa. Examples: STIs, condyloma, etc. .  The psoriasis consultation (see dedicated sheet).  The immunity disorders consultation  follows up transplant patients or patients with an innate or acquired immunity disorder that results in skin fragility.   Joint consultations with other specialists are proposed for  Inflammatory diseases (such as psoriatic arthritis), with rheumatology; Auto-immune bullous and systemic diseases of the lupus type, with  internal medicine ; Dermatosurgery with plastic surgery; Dermatopaediatrics with paediatrics; Mucosal diseases with gynaecology. Aesthetic dermatology proposes laser treatment for rosacea and laser CO2 for  dermabrasion treatment. Please note: A supplement of 55 euros will be charged for non-invasive skin imaging (L-OCT). In the case of a complex consultation (multiple lesions, for example), a supplement of 75 euros will be charged. An additional charge of 100 euros will be made for mapping. Our team Image Our specialists Focus The H.U.B’s Interhosptial Dermatology Department is the reference and training centre for non-invasive imaging. By combining a confocal microscope and optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT), it is possible, for example, to see in the epidermis with near-cell resolution. This permits a diagnosis of certain diseases without having to take a skin sample (biopsy).  Image Research The H.U.B’s Interhospital Dermatology Department carries out many clinical and translational research projects. In particular, it helps draw up disease registers   (Verneuil’s disease/ hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, skin cancers, etc.). This provides for a better understanding of their sub-types, their development and response to treatment.

Endocrinology
Our role Endocrinology is the medical speciality concerned with the hormones secreted by the various endocrine glands:  the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, the parathyroid gland, the adrenal glands, the pancreas, the ovaries and the testicles.  Diseases of the endocrine glands are either a hormonal malfunctioning (excessive or insufficient production of one or more hormones) or tumours, usually benign.  Image Image Image Image We always seek to provide an optimal treatment for every patient. To do so, we work in close cooperation with numerous medical or surgical specialities. Professor Bernard Corvilain head of the Endocrinology Department at the Erasmus Hospital Our specialities The Erasmus Hospital Endocrinology Department provides general and specialised consultations depending on the gland in question:   The Diabetology ClinicThyroid pathologies such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, goiter and thyroid nodules (cf Focus). In the case of thyroid cancer the treatment is organised in conjunction with specialist doctors from the Jules Bordet Institute.   Pituitary pathologies  are principally adenomas (tumours) that can secrete too many hormones and/or impede the proper functioning of the gland or lead to the compression of adjacent anatomical structures. The treatment sometimes takes the form of neurosurgery.    Adrenal gland pathologies: adrenal insufficiencies (Addison’s disease, congenital adrenal hyperplasia), corticosteroid hypersecretion syndrome (Cushing syndrome, hyperandrogenism),  tumours of the adrenal medulla, etc. In the case of malignant tumours the multidisciplinary treatment is organised in conjunction with specialists from the Jules Bordet Institute.   Hyperandrogenism, frequently associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is treated in cooperation with  gynaecologists and dermatologists from the H.U.B. Pathologies of the calcium and phosphate metabolism. The treatment of hyper- and hypocalcemia – and of their possible consequences for the skeleton and kidneys – is organised in conjunction with rheumatologists and nephrologists from the H.U.B. Male and female hypogonadism : Turner’s and Klinefelter’s syndrome are treated in cooperation with gynaecologists and urologists from the H.U.B. The transition consultation concerns young adults with an endocrine pathology that began in childhood and is designed to ensure that optimal follow-up continues into adulthood. An endocrinologist from the Erasmus Hospital meets the young patient (and their parents) and the treating child endocrinologist from the HUDERF prior to transition to adult endocrinology at the Erasmus Hospital.    The Endocrinology Departments at the Erasmus Hospital and the HUDERF children’s hospital are recognised as a European expert centre in treating rare endocrine diseases that are sometimes of genetic origin.   Our team Image Our specialist doctors Focus The  (para)thyroid nodule diagnostic unit provides a weekly joint consultation with doctors specialised in endocrinology, radiology and nuclear medicine. Patients meet with these specialists in succession at the same place and during the same morning or afternoon for the purposes of diagnosis (ultrasound, scintigraphy scan and/or bone density scan) and a proposed treatment.      Research The diabetes and obesity investigation clinic, headed by Professor Mirian Cnop, supervises a number of fundamental, translational and clinical research projects on various types of  diabetes.

Gastroenterology
Our role Gastroenterology is the medico-technical discipline concerned with digestive pathologies, that is, pathologies of the digestive tract - from the mouth to the anus – and the organs and glands situated in the abdomen: liver, pancreas and gall bladder.  Image Although we are separate entities, in practice we form together with digestive surgery and digestive oncology a large medico-surgical department that treats digestive pathologies. Within which our patients often follow integrated care pathways. Our specialities The Erasmus Hospital's Medical Gastroenterology Department spans 7 clinics that correspond to recognised fields of expertise:The Intestinal Diseases Clinic (examples: Crohn's disease,  cœliac disease, ulcerative colitis, auto-immune diseases)  The Digestive Endoscopy Clinic The Liver Disease Clinic that is a reference centre, especially for advanced liver diseasesThe Liver Transplant Clinic that carries out liver transplants The Functional Digestive Pathologies Clinic – pathologies that are the number one reason for consultations in gastroenterology – that proposes, in particular, a digestive comfort consultation for irritable intestine syndrome and gastro-oesophageal reflux, for example   The Pancreatic Diseases and Nutritional Support Clinic that treats non-cancerous pancreatic diseases (e.g. pancreatitis), problems of (mal)nutrition and parenteral feeding, at hospital or at home     The Integrated Obesity Centre. Our team Image Our specialist doctors Focus The Erasmus Hospital Medical Gastroenterology Department is a reference centre – and reputed training centre – for endoscopy, for purposes of diagnosis and treatment.  New procedures at the leading edge of technology are studied here.  Cooperation with the ULB's Polytechnic Faculty has even permitted the development of an endoscope able to carry out partial gastric sleeve surgery. This procedure has shown its effectiveness in weight loss among obesity patients.   Research Thanks to its large "biobank", the Medical Gastroenterology Department works with the ULB's Experimental Gastroenterology Laboratory in pursuing 3 main lines of translational research:  liver diseases and cancerschronic inflammatory bowel diseasespancreatic cancers.A clinical research unit permits access to innovative treatments, notably in oncology, hepatology and inflammatory bowel diseases.   Publications Common genetic variation in alcohol-related hepatocellular carcinoma: a case-control genome-wide association study Authors: Eric Trépo, PhD *, Stefano Caruso, PhD *, Jie Yang, PhD *, Sandrine Imbeaud, PhD, Gabrielle Couchy, PhD, Quentin Bayard, PhDJournal : The Lancet Oncology, Volume 23, Issue 1, January 2022 Endoscopic sutured gastroplasty in addition to lifestyle modification: short-term efficacy in a controlled randomised trial Authors: Vincent Huberty, Ivo Boskoski, Vincenzo Bove, Pauline Van Ouytsel, Guido Costamagna, Marc A Barthet, Jacques DevièreJournal : Gut-Bmj Journal, published October 28, 2020 Collecting New Peak and Intermediate Infliximab Levels to Predict Remission in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Authors: Claire Liefferinckx, Jérémie Bottieau, Jean-François Toubeau, Debby Thomas, Jean-François Rahier, Edouard Louis, Filip Baert, Pieter Dewin, Lieven Pouillon, Guy Lambrecht, François Vallée, Severine Vermeire, Peter Bossuyt, Denis FranchimontJournal : Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Volume 28, Issue 2, February 2022, Pages 208–217 Long-term outcomes in patients with decompensated alcohol-related liver disease, steatohepatitis and Maddrey's discriminant function Authors: Delphine Degré, Rudolf E. Geriatrics
Our role Geriatrics is concerned with the care of persons aged 75 and over who are in fragile health due to the accumulation of chronic or acute diseases, (risk of) falling, malnutrition, cognitive disorder, etc. Image Image This holistic approach means that geriatrics is an interdisciplinary medical discipline. Geriatricians work in teams, with nurses, auxiliary nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, speech therapists, (neuro)psychologists, social workers and also with other specialist doctors Professor Sandra De Breucker Head of the Geriatric Department at the Erasmus Hospital Our specialities The Erasmus Hospital Geriatric Department is structured around 5 areas of care as defined by the Royal Decree on the Care Programme for Geriatric Patients:   The Geriatric Hospitalisation Unit with 50 beds at the Erasmus Hospital and 84 beds at the Geriatric Rehabilitation Centre (CRG) in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.  Geriatric consultations given by geriatricians who each have a subspeciality:   orthogeriatrics, cardiogeriatrics, oncogeriatrics, psychogeriatrics, geriatric emergencies, sarcopenia and (mal)nutrition (see Focus).    The Geriatric Day Hospital  which patients attend as outpatients during one or two days for a diagnosis or to administer certain treatment (transfusion,  intravenous iron, treatment of osteoporosis, etc.) at the request of the GP or specialist doctor.   Internal geriatric liaising  that involves a multidisciplinary mobile team assessing geriatric patients hospitalised in other hospital departments. Persons identified as fragile benefit from a specific care pathway (assessment, multidisciplinary assessment, opinion and follow up).   External geriatric liaising  that involves cooperation with partners outside the hospital, namely the GP, rest and care home, rehabilitation centres and/or home care providers so as to ensure effective continuity of geriatric care.    Our team Image Our medical specialists Focus Each geriatric subspeciality – orthogeriatrics, cardiogeriatrics, oncogeriatrics, psychogeriatrics, geriatric emergencies and (mal)nutrition  – is the subject of a specific care pathway. Example: A 75-year-old patient with a fragile profile and with cancer. The oncologist refers the patient to the specialist oncogeriatrics doctor and his or her team. They assess the patient and draw up recommendations at the nutritional, functional and therapeutic level so that the patient is best placed to be able to tolerate the cancer treatment.    Research The Erasmus Hospital Geriatric Department participates in a number of clinical studies. Example: Evaluation of the effectiveness of fall sensors fitted in hospitalisation rooms, evaluation of  the  characteristics and needs of close helpers, influence of nurses training on managing pain in elderly patients admitted for hip fracture, etc.       Publications Analysis of inflammatory markers and hormones in old cancer patients: a descriptive study. Sleep apnea
What are sleep apnea? As the name indicates, sleep apnea is when breathing stops, for at least 10 seconds, during sleep. If this happens more than five times an hour, you are no doubt suffering from obstructive sleep apnea-hyponea syndrome (OSAHS).    OSAHS is often but not always accompanied by snoring. In any event, it affects the quality of sleep. Not only do persons with this condition wake up feeling tired, but in the longer term OSAHS has a series of physiological and/or psychological consequences that can give rise to cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, haematological, psychiatric (depression) or cognitive (memory and concentration problems, etc.) complications. Far from being inconsequential, OSAHS impairs the quality of life and brings a risk of premature death.    Care Some specialist doctors at the H.U.B have particular expertise in sleep disorders. These are mainly psychiatrists, ENT specialists, pneumologists, neurologists or even stomatologists. These specialists can prescribe a polysomnography or sleep test at the H.U.B. Sleep Laboratory.    What are the procedures for a sleep test?    You generally arrive at the Sleep Laboratory at around 2 pm. A member of staff will show you to a private room. Before lying down you are fitted with a number of sensors connected to various measuring devices. Depending on the case, a video camera may record you during the night. This enables the team to detect any abnormal movements (sleepwalking,  epilepsy, etc.), to ensure you are safe in the event of nocturnal restlessness and to reconnect any sensor that may become detached during your sleep.    The next day the numerous data collected are analysed. This analysis makes it possible to confirm the OSAHS diagnosis and/or identify any other sleep disorders. A secondary assessment by another specialist doctor is sometimes necessary.    Treatment  Depending on the causes, origin and seriousness of the OSAHS, various treatment is possible:    People with OSAHS caused by sleeping on their back are offered positional therapy to correct their sleeping positions.    As being overweight or obese is the number one risk factor for OSAHS, patients are always advised to lose weight.     Alcohol, smoking and taking myorelaxant drugs (such as benzodiazepines) can also aggravate OSAHS. Patients can therefore be directed towards specialised care to help them reduce or stop the use of these substances.    The Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is a mask, usually nasal, that is worn during the night to correct apnea.      A mandibular advanced orthosis is generally indicated for a mild to moderate OSAHS (< 30 apneas/hour). This orthosis is made to measure in the Department of Stomatology   Maxillofacial surgery makes it possible to correct in apnea sufferers the position of the mandible (lower jaw) and of the maxillary (upper jaw) and is recommended for moderate to severe OSAHS  (> 30 apneas/hour).           Image Research The H.U.B Sleep Laboratory participates in a number of studies. An important line of research is the connection between sleep disorders and certain cardiovascular and neurological diseases (MS, Parkinson’s, etc.), the polysomnographic markers of certain pathologies, etc.
