COPD: take the time to listen to your breathing!
On 18 November 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the teams from the Pneumology Department of Erasme Hospital H.U.B will welcome you at an information and awareness stand dedicated to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This is an opportunity to better understand this respiratory disease, talk to healthcare professionals and, if necessary, assess your respiratory capacity.
COPD, a still too little-known respiratory disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic disease that causes progressive and lasting obstruction of the airways. It makes breathing increasingly difficult and, over time, can considerably limit everyday activities.
In Belgium, according to Sciensano’s 2023–2024 health survey, 3.5% of the population aged 15 and over report having COPD. Nevertheless, the disease is often diagnosed late.
Smoking is the main risk factor. Other exposures, particularly to certain dusts, irritants or pollutants, may also contribute to its development. Genetic factors are involved less frequently.
The first signs may be subtle: a persistent cough, sputum (phlegm), shortness of breath during activities that were previously easy to perform… These are symptoms that people sometimes tend to trivialise, particularly when they smoke or have smoked.
Learn more about the disease to take action sooner
COPD cannot be cured, but early and appropriate management can slow its progression, limit symptoms and preserve quality of life as much as possible.
Stopping smoking is an essential step, even when the disease is already established. Medical follow-up, appropriate treatments and, in some cases, respiratory rehabilitation can also help patients manage their condition on a daily basis.
Come and talk to our teams!
